Dua for Someone Facing a Calamity
When a person faces a calamity, loss or a painful hardship, Islam teaches us to turn to Allah Ta’ala with patience and Dua. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught a beautiful supplication to recite at the time of a calamity, asking Allah for reward in the hardship and for something better in its place.
Dua in Arabic
إِنَّا لِلَّهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ، اللَّهُمَّ أْجُرْنِي فِي مُصِيبَتِي، وَأَخْلِفْ لِي خَيْرًا مِنْهَا
Roman English
Innaa lillaahi wa innaa ilaihi raaji‘oon. Allahumma’jurnee fee museebatee, wa akhlif lee khairan minhaa.
English Meaning
“Indeed, we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return. O Allah, reward me for my calamity and replace it for me with something better than it.”

Sahih Muslim 918 — Hazrat Umm Salamah رضي الله عنها narrated that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught this Dua regarding calamity. When she recited it after the death of her husband, Allah replaced her loss with something better.
Note: The wording “Allahumma’jurnee…” is in the first person because it is the supplication taught to the person experiencing the calamity. A person comforting someone facing a calamity may encourage them to recite this Dua rather than changing its wording without evidence.
