Dua for Janazah
When offering Salat al-Janazah, the main purpose is to sincerely pray for the deceased. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught a beautiful Masnoon Dua asking Allah Ta’ala to forgive the living and the deceased, protect us from being misguided after death, and grant the deceased a good end upon Islam. This Dua is authentically reported in Sunan Abi Dawud 3201.

اللَّهُمَّ اغْفِرْ لِحَيِّنَا وَمَيِّتِنَا، وَصَغِيرِنَا وَكَبِيرِنَا، وَذَكَرِنَا وَأُنْثَانَا، وَشَاهِدِنَا وَغَائِبِنَا، اللَّهُمَّ مَنْ أَحْيَيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَأَحْيِهِ عَلَى الْإِيمَانِ، وَمَنْ تَوَفَّيْتَهُ مِنَّا فَتَوَفَّهُ عَلَى الْإِسْلَامِ، اللَّهُمَّ لَا تَحْرِمْنَا أَجْرَهُ، وَلَا تُضِلَّنَا بَعْدَهُ
Roman English
Allahummaghfir lihayyinaa wa mayyitinaa, wa sagheerinaa wa kabeerinaa, wa dhakarinaa wa unthaanaa, wa shaahidinaa wa ghaa’ibinaa. Allahumma man ahyaitahu minnaa fa-ahyihi ‘alal-eemaan, wa man tawaffaitahu minnaa fatawaffahu ‘alal-Islaam. Allahumma laa tahrimnaa ajrahu, wa laa tudillanaa ba‘dahu.
English Meaning
“O Allah, forgive those of us who are living and those of us who are dead, our young and our old, our males and our females, those of us who are present and those who are absent. O Allah, whoever among us You keep alive, keep him alive upon faith, and whoever among us You cause to die, cause him to die upon Islam. O Allah, do not deprive us of his reward and do not lead us astray after him.”
