Dua for Iftar
At the time of Iftar, when a fasting person breaks the fast, the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught a beautiful supplication expressing gratitude to Allah for removing thirst and granting the reward of fasting. This Dua is reported in Sunan Abi Dawud 2357 and is graded Hasan by Al-Albani.
Dua in Arabic
ذَهَبَ الظَّمَأُ، وَابْتَلَّتِ الْعُرُوقُ، وَثَبَتَ الْأَجْرُ إِنْ شَاءَ اللَّهُ
Roman English
Dhahabaz-zama’u, wabtallatil-‘urooqu, wa thabatal-ajru in shaa Allah.
English Meaning
“The thirst has gone, the veins are moistened, and the reward is assured, if Allah wills.”

Hazrat Abdullah ibn Umar رضي الله عنهما reported that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would say this Dua when breaking his fast. The narration is graded Hasan.
Important note: The commonly circulated Dua beginning “Allahumma laka sumtu wa ‘ala rizqika aftartu” is also found in Sunan Abi Dawud 2358, but that particular narration is graded Da’if (weak) by Al-Albani. Therefore, for this article, the stronger reported wording above is preferable.
