Dua When Someone Praises You
When someone praises or speaks highly of us, Islam teaches us to remain humble and remember that Allah knows our true condition better than anyone else. This beautiful supplication asks Allah not to hold us accountable for what people say about us, to forgive what they do not know about us, and to make us better than they think. This wording is reported from one of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ, and the addition “make me better than they think” is reported through another chain.
Roman English
Allahumma laa tu’aakhidhnee bimaa yaqooloon, waghfir lee maa laa ya‘lamoon, waj‘alnee khayran mimmaa yazunnoon.
English Meaning
“O Allah, do not hold me accountable for what they say, forgive me for what they do not know, and make me better than they think.
Reference
This supplication is mentioned in Al-Adab Al-Mufrad 761. The wording is reported regarding a Companion of the Prophet ﷺ when he was praised. Al-Albani graded the report authentic in Sahih Al-Adab Al-Mufrad. The phrase “and make me better than they think” is an additional wording reported by Al-Bayhaqi.
Important: It is better not to present this as a direct Prophetic ﷺ Hadith/Dua. It is a supplication reported from the Companions.
